What Is Gum Contouring?

Gum contouring - pink aesthetics - reshapes the gum line so that the frame around your teeth is as considered as the teeth themselves. A smile is read as a whole: the gum line is what tells the eye whether teeth are the right length, whether they are symmetrical, and where the smile begins and ends. Teeth can be perfect and a smile still look wrong because the gum sits too low, too high, or unevenly across the front.

The treatments range from a few minutes with a laser to reposition a single uneven margin, through crown lengthening that exposes more tooth, to grafting that covers exposed roots or repigments darkened gum. Which is appropriate depends on why the gum is where it is - and that is a measurement, not a preference.

Gummy Smile

A gummy smile is one where more than about three millimetres of gum shows when you smile fully. It is common, it is not a disease, and plenty of people never think about it. When someone does want it changed, the important step is finding the cause, because four different causes produce the same appearance and each needs a different treatment:

• Altered passive eruption - the gum never finished migrating to its adult position, so the teeth are the right size but partly covered. Gum contouring alone solves this.
• A hyperactive upper lip that lifts further than average. Contouring the gum here achieves little; the answer is lip repositioning or a small dose of botulinum toxin to the lip elevators.
• Vertical maxillary excess - the upper jaw is longer than average. Only orthognathic surgery genuinely corrects this, and any clinic offering to fix it with a laser is not being straight with you.
• Worn or short teeth, where the proportion is wrong rather than the gum. Restoring the teeth is the treatment.

Assessment means measuring the tooth length, the gum display at rest and at full smile, the lip mobility and the bone level with a radiograph. It takes ten minutes and it decides everything that follows.

Gum Contouring Methods

How Is It Done?

1. Analysis and design. Photographs, measurements and a digital design showing the proposed gum line. Where restorations are part of the plan, a mock-up is made so you see the final proportions before anything is cut.
2. Local anaesthetic. The whole procedure is done awake and painlessly.
3. Reshaping. With a laser or a fine scalpel, following the design and respecting the biological width - the band of attachment between gum and bone that must not be violated. Cutting into it is what produces chronic inflammation and recession a year later.
4. Bone, where needed. If the bone crest is too close to the crown, gum removal alone will simply regrow. A small amount of bone is recontoured through the same access.
5. Healing and review. A week for the surface, six to eight weeks for the margin to settle into its final position. Definitive veneers or crowns are made after that, never before.

Laser Gum Contouring

A diode laser cuts and seals at the same time, so bleeding is minimal, the field stays visible, sutures are usually unnecessary and healing is quick and comfortable. For pure soft-tissue reshaping it is an excellent tool, and it is what most patients picture when they hear "gum contouring".

What a laser does not do is change bone. Where the underlying bone crest is the reason the gum sits low, laser gingivectomy gives a beautiful result for a few months and then the tissue rebounds to where the bone dictates. That is the single most common disappointment in this treatment, and it is entirely predictable from the pre-operative measurement. If nobody has measured, you are being sold a laser rather than a diagnosis.

How Long Does It Take?

A single tooth takes minutes; reshaping the six front teeth typically takes 30 to 60 minutes in one appointment. Crown lengthening involving bone takes longer and may be done in two sittings for a full smile line. Where restorations follow, the sequence is: contouring, six to eight weeks of healing, then the definitive work - a timeline worth knowing before you book flights.

Healing

• Days one to three: tenderness and a whitish film over the treated margin - that is normal healing tissue, not infection. Soft, cool food.
• The first week: brush the treated area gently with a soft brush; use the prescribed rinse. No spicy or acidic food.
• Two weeks: the surface has healed and looks normal.
• Six to eight weeks: the margin reaches its final position. This is when photographs for comparison are taken and when any veneers or crowns are prepared.
• Avoid smoking during healing - it is the main reason a graft or a contoured margin fails to settle as planned.

Is Gum Contouring Harmful?

Not when it is planned properly. The risk is not the laser; it is removing tissue without respecting the biological width or without accounting for bone. Do that and the result is chronic inflammation, an unstable margin and, in time, recession that is far harder to treat than the original problem.

Nor is it appropriate on inflamed gums. Periodontal health comes first, always - contouring an infected gum line is decorating a wall that is still wet.

Is the Result Permanent?

Where the diagnosis was right, yes - reshaping with due regard for the bone gives a stable, lasting result. Where excess tissue was removed without addressing the bone, expect rebound within months. Gum contouring done alongside veneers or crowns is stable because the restoration supports the new margin.

What can still change it over the years is gum disease and heavy-handed brushing. The result is maintained the same way any other periodontal result is: daily interdental cleaning and regular check-ups.

Dark Gums

Gum colour varies naturally between people, and darker pigmentation is simply melanin in the tissue - it is normal, healthy, and does not need treating. Some patients would nevertheless prefer their gums to appear pinker, and depigmentation with a laser removes the superficial pigmented layer over one or two sessions with a fast, comfortable recovery.

Two things worth knowing: pigmentation can gradually return over several years, and darkening that has appeared recently in an adult is not a cosmetic matter - new pigmentation, particularly in a smoker or a patient on certain medications, should be examined before it is treated. Any single dark patch with an irregular border is examined, never lasered.

Treating Gum Recession

Recession is the opposite problem: too little gum rather than too much, with root surface exposed, teeth that look long, and often sensitivity to cold. It is covered with a connective tissue graft - tissue taken from the palate or a substitute material placed over the root and secured under the gum. In suitable cases, particularly recessions with intact bone between the teeth, full root coverage is achievable and stable.

The cause is treated first, or the graft simply recedes again: aggressive brushing with a hard brush, untreated gum disease, a frenum pulling on the margin, or teeth moved orthodontically outside the bone envelope.

Who Is Suitable?

Healthy adults with controlled gum health and no active decay. Adolescents are usually asked to wait, because the gum line is still migrating and a contour set at sixteen may be wrong at twenty. Uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking and untreated periodontitis all need addressing first. And where the cause is skeletal rather than gingival, the honest answer is that this treatment is not the one that will fix it.

Gum Contouring for Visiting Patients

Soft-tissue contouring alone fits a short trip comfortably: one appointment, a few days of healing, and you can fly home. Send a photograph of your full smile through WhatsApp beforehand - taken in daylight, smiling as broadly as you naturally do - and we can usually tell you whether your case is gum, bone, lip or tooth proportion before you travel.

Where the plan combines contouring with veneers or crowns, allow for the six to eight week wait between the two stages. In practice that means either two visits, or contouring on a first trip you were making anyway. We would rather set out that timetable than fit definitive restorations to a gum line that has not finished settling - those are the cases that come back for redoing.

Why We Do Not Publish Gum Contouring Prices

Because the same request covers a five-minute laser adjustment of one margin and a full crown-lengthening procedure with bone recontouring across ten teeth. Until the gum display, the tooth length and the bone level have been measured, nobody can tell you which of those you need. After the examination you receive a written plan naming the procedure and the number of teeth involved.

Gum Contouring in Kusadasi
